Olaotse Kepadisa Honoured with Icons of Africa Award for Sports Commentary
Football commentator, Olaotse Kepadisa has added a remarkable achievement to his growing career after being honoured with the Icons of Africa Award for Sports Commentary at a prestigious event held on the 30 May 2026 in Sandton.
Reflecting on the recognition, Kepadisa admitted that the news initially came as a surprise. "I was perplexed when I was called and asked to be part of the event in Sandton. I honestly thought they had contacted the wrong person until they presented my profile to me," he said with a laugh.
The award serves as recognition for years of dedication and passion, particularly his commitment to promoting African languages and providing deeper context to African football competitions. Known for his insightful coverage of CAF competitions and the Africa Cup of Nations, Kepadisa goes beyond the action on the field.
"When I'm assigned African fixtures, especially CAF matches and AFCON tournaments, I immerse myself in the countries involved. I explore their cultures, languages, histories, traditions and even explain currency differences to listeners. I always strive to give audiences a broader understanding of Africa, not just the football. Fortunately, someone noticed," he explained.
The award winner believes that his journey is a reminder that recognition often comes when least expected. "It's true that a prophet is not always valued where he comes from. This award shows that hard work and dedication never go unnoticed."
Despite receiving continental recognition, Kepadisa remains grounded and focused on the future.
"Nothing has changed. I'm simply motivated to work even harder, continue growing my craft and keep improving every day," he said.
He also acknowledged the many people who have supported him throughout his career.
"I have received tremendous support both internally and externally. I'm especially grateful to my family, friends and colleagues who constantly push me forward, including Oshebeng, OJ and Rabi. I also appreciate the unwavering support of Baba Mthethwa."
Looking ahead, Kepadisa's goal remains simple: continuous growth through dedication and hard work.
"I want to grow my craft gradually and keep working hard. Every setback is a setup for a great comeback. The key is to stay focused and keep grinding."
As a respected voice in African sports broadcasting, Kepadisa hopes his story will inspire aspiring commentators, journalists and young professionals across the continent.
"I want people to know that they should never limit themselves. May I be living proof that the universe favours the underdogs. If you remain committed to your dreams and keep putting in the work, opportunities will come."
The Icons of Africa Award stands as a testament to Olaotse Kepadisa's commitment to excellence, his passion for African storytelling and his dedication to enriching sports commentary through culture, language and history. For many young broadcasters, his journey serves as an inspiring example that perseverance, authenticity and hard work can open doors to continental recognition.
