Asande Simelane Crowned The Flyweight Division Champion

Asande Simelane fulfilled her promise on Saturday, September 16, 2023, when she outperformed herself to defeat Mihle Tulu and capture the Flyweight division title at the Matlosana Banquet Hall in Klerksdorp.

The Rise of Women in Boxing Series 2 encompassed the fight, which was held in the North West province and travelled throughout South Africa to give women the chance to show off their abilities. According to Simelane, this series will draw sponsors and demonstrate that women can be successful in the sport.

Simelane hopes to challenge for the provincial title before the year ends in 2023.

Asande, congratulations on your win on Saturday. How does it feel to win the flyweight division title at the Rise of Women in Boxing Tournament?

I am proud of my victory. I’m a junior flyweight and flyweight is a bit bigger than me but I still won and it makes me feel happy.

How did you prepare yourself physically and mentally for the fight?

I have been in the gym, training and I did all that was necessary for the past two months. I have been training my mind too, to stay focussed and concentrate on the upcoming fight.

What do you consider to be your greatest strengths as a boxer?

As a boxer, my greatest strengths are the movements and defence in the ring. it is not only about punching and counting but defence is important.

What do you think of the Boxing Series created for women?

It brings so many opportunities to be recognized as women in Boxing. We used to fight once in a while, but now we will be seen as it’s an all women series. I think sponsors will start noticing that also we as women we are good at boxing too.

What kind of impact do you think it’ll have on those who are still on the rise in boxing?

It’ll give them more experience and learn skills from other boxers who have been boxing for some time now. it will help them rise.

What’s next for you before the end of the year?

I am looking forward to fighting another six rounds and hopefully by December I will be fighting for a provincial title.
